A total of 202 households got access to clean drinking water

With support from the Citizens’ Charter program, the Abtikar Community Development Council (CDC), which is located in the 15th District of Herat City have gotten access to clean drinking water. The benefiting community reaches to a total of 202 households.

According to the residents of the community, "We were facing with shortage of water before construction of the water supply network. Our women, children and men used to wait for hours in a queue with their buckets behind the gates of those neighbors who were having drilled wells. In other occasions, when we were not having water, we had no option left but to walk for a long distance either to masque or public facility. Thus, in each house, one or two persons were dedicated to supply the water”.

In the mobilization stage, when the community began its activities, they were able to prepare its Community Development Plan (CDP). The residents of the area prioritized their needs and requested Citizens’ Charter program to fund construction of the water supply network for them. After a technical survey and preparation of a proposal, construction of the water supply network commenced and now it has been completed.

Technically, the water supply network is 8459-meter in length, consisting of one 150 meter deep well and an overhead water reservoir, having a capacity of 45 cubic meters of water. The total cost of this project is 5830000 AFN funded through the CCNPP budget with a 25% contribution of the community. With construction of the water supply network, 202 families are able to have access to safe drinking water. During its implementation, the project has also created 417 labor days for the skilled laborers and 2,272 for the unskilled laborers.

"With construction of this water supply network and extension of pipes, the problem that we were facing is addressed. Our children and women do not need to spend hours looking for a bucket of water, awaiting our neighbors to allow us to fetch the water from the drilled wells or a public facility. Now, we have adequate access to clean water. Our children can go to school or a mosque instead of looking for water. We thank the Citizens' Charter program, that have always addressed people's problems", said Bashir Ahmad, a beneficiary of the project.

The local residents also expressed their happiness with the construction of water supply network and appreciated activities of Citizens Charter Program. They also strive of creating a pathway for unity, peace and mutual acceptance among the citizens, by making positive change in their mind-set, thus empowering the youth, men and women for development of urban areas.
