A Suspension Bridge Connected Tens of Villages in Kabul
June 23, 2021 – A suspension bridge project worth more than AFN 4.2 million, funded by the Citizens’ Charter National Priority Program of the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD/CCNPP) has successfully been completed and is ready for operation in Deh Naw village, Guldara district of Kabul province.
The bridge project was handed over to Deh Naw Community Development Council (CDC) by Muhmmad Yaqoob Haidari the Governor of Kabul in the presence of Guldara District Governor, Kabul Rural Rehabilitation and Development Director and several community elders. Mr. Haidari has suggested that the CDCs should have proper coordination among themselves as wells as they should give full attention to the maintenance and protection of development projects.
While expressing his satisfaction and pleasure over the construction of the suspension bridge, Mr. Abdul Hameed Mansoori the Deh Naw CDC Head revealed: “In the past, the villagers couldn’t cross the waterway easily and go to the district center, especially during winter when the water level rose to a particular elevation. When we wanted to take the patients to hospital, we had to walk more than 2km to reach a bridge, located to the west of our village right in the outlet of the valley. Fortunately, the construction of the suspension bridge with financial assistance of the Citizens’ Charter has helped us put an end to all difficulties that we had in the past in terms of crossing the waterway, particularly during heavy snowfalls and rains that can contribute to run-off and cause floods in the region.”
The bridge 50 meters long and 1.5 meters wide, supported by a 40-meter wing wall and concrete towers at both ends not only directly benefited 407 households, but also connected tens of villages with the district center. Taking the employment generation and economic recovery into consideration, a total of 3,200 labor days have been created for both skilled and unskilled local laborers during the suspension bridge project implementation.
It is worth mentioning that the MRRD/CCNPP has so far been able to build more than 356 km of tertiary rural roads, 400 culverts and 307 meters of both concrete and cable foot and vehicle bridges in the sector of transport across Afghanistan.
