Women in Kohna Zawot Establish the First Grain Bank

Kohna Zawot is the name of a village, located around 10 Km from Balkh district, Mazar Sharif. Women in this village have played a key role in decision making within the Community Development Council –CDC from the very beginning of CCNPP social mobilization in the community. Some of these women are members of the vulnerable group sub-committee of the CDC. As part of their social activities, the women in the sub-committee started to identify the most impoverished families in the community in close cooperation with other CDC members. Then these women, decided to create a grain bank, aiming to support the identified impoverished families.

Gulalai, a hardworking lady, has put a lot of effort for gathering a large number of community women to contribute to the establishment of the a grain bank in the village which marks the first grain bank established and run by women under CCNPP. “Our village women did not know how to help each other in the past. Fortunately, once the Citizens’ Charter covered our community, it raised our awareness and encouraged unity among villagers. This program taught us to understand or feel what these poor families are experiencing and how to assist them by creating a grain bank in the communities”, said Gulalai.

Noor Begam, another woman, appointed by the villagers as the grain bank cashier says that she is looking after the goods as if they are her own property. She emphasizes that she will continue to conduct campaigns on a regular basis in order to collect more food and non-food items so that they could support the needy families in the community.
